 1900s Corset

During the 1900s, corsets slid downwards and became more elastic. Many different types of corsets were born in the early 1900s. In 1900, summer corsets for women and also toddlers were born. Summer corsets were made out of a cotton mesh material instead of regular jean like coutil. This lightweight mesh  allowed the skin to breathe through the heat, making the corset more comfortable. The toddler's summer corset fit a child of about 12-18 months, but was later extended by adding tapes to the buttons making it bigger to fit a slightly older child. It had brass eyelet holes all over it for ventilation.

In 1901, S Bend, Silk Ribbon, and Curved Busk Waspie corsets were born. The S Bend corset is French and expensive. It has an extremely straight busk with diagonal seams, stitches, and gussets to achieve to achieve the legendary S bend shape. The Curved Busk Waspie Corset became fashionable for young ladies who didn't want or need the support of the older style of corset that their mothers wore, and offered no support for the bust. This corsets were for the skinny, but they gave a dramatic trim waist. The Curved Busk Waspie Corset shown below is made of cotton coutil and boned with tiny skinny bones. The Silk Ribbon Corset is very soft and delicate. This corset was made to be lingerie.

In 1908, the S Bend Warner's Summer Corset was born. It was made of cotton mesh for the summer. Diagonal seaming and large flared hips molded the figure into the S Bend shape. The busk was perfectly straight and very rigid. By this date, corsets were starting to become longer in the body.
